WOW Writer: Carolanne

This week I chose to spotlight Carolanne for her interesting take on life as a shoe.  The students were given several prompts about being their shoe and life from that perspective.  They were to write for me what they would hear, feel, smell, taste, and see in the voice of a shoe.  Carolanne took this assignment and ran with it, thus creating the essay, "A Day as My Shoes."

A Day as My Shoes
By Carolanne Cimino
I head doors rattle and water running.  I squirm in anticipation anxiously awaiting my trip to school.  It’s a Monday and the house is alive.  It’s dark downstairs in the entry hall and it’s kinda scary.  The birds have obviously been awake for awhile and they are screeching.  A black and white dog comes trampling down the stairs and comes to a halt in front of me.  It sniffs my belly and I hear myself whimpering.  I’ve seen so many good shoes eaten; I don’t want to be like them!  The dog looks at me accusingly but just goes back upstairs.  I breathe a sigh of relief; another day of survival.
When a new set of feet appear on the steps, I quickly realize it’s my owner.  She steps into me, and I graciously accept her embrace.  The door swings open, and I’m greeted with the cool morning dew on my soles.  We walk up the street to her bus stop and I wait patiently.  Stepping onto the bus brings mixed emotions.  First joy, from seeing all my friends, then disgust, because the floors are nasty!  It’s sticky and icky!  Not something I really enjoy.
Finally we reach the school and the halls are extremely crowded.  We come to stop at a large metal box.  Knobs twist and I see it open.  We head to class and this is a good break for me.  The day drowns on and I’m relieved when we go home.  I fall asleep as soon as I’m kicked off!
